A survey of moraines and marine limits
(mapping and aneroid measurements) has
been carried out in the area between
Hornafjörður and Norðfjörður in East and
Southeast Iceland. An examination of the
accumulated data has revealed a different
extent of the main Icelandic ice sheet and
its outlet glaciers and different heights for
the marine limits in the area. This differ-
ence in height and extent occurs both lo-
cally and on a regional scale, but is corre-
lated to three separate stages in the de-
glaciation and sea-level changes in east
and southeast Iceland.
The Fáskrúðsfjörður stage, the oldest
stage represents the first standstill or read-
vance of the glaciers since the beginning
of their retreat after the Weichselian
maximum extent. During or prior to this
stage sea-level transgressed and reached
its highest Late Weichselian position at
about 52 m above sea-level (a.s.l.) at the
moraines in the outer part of Fáskrúðs-
fjörður, Reyðarfjörður and Norðfjörður.
At that time the major ice divide of the
Icelandic ice sheet in East Iceland was lo-
cated between Kverkfjöll in the south and
Melrakkaslétta in the north. A secondary
ice divide coincided approximately with
the present water divide between the
fjords and Fljótsdalshérað in East Iceland.
This secondary ice divide separated the
