early students of deglaciation in Iceland, the reces-
sion of the inland ice sheet occurred in the form of a
frontally retreating glacier, a conclusion which still is
considered valid, at least for the deglaciation of the
area below the 100 m level.
Both Thoroddsen (1891,1905-06) and Bárðarson
(1921,1923) were of the opinion, that two stages could
be recognized in the evolution of sea-level changes.
