The standard deviation of the temperature in
January is shown in Fig.5. It is obvious that there are
large differences between coasts and inland in this
month. The highest values, of the order 2.4°-2.6°C,
are found in the inland and highland regions with a
maximum in the northeastern interior. The lowest
values, below 2°C, are seen in the outermost coastal
areas of southem, western and eastern Iceland.
Fig.6 shows the standard deviation of the temper-
ature in July. In most parts of the country the July
values are less than half of the January ones. A very
distinct maximum area of 1.4°C is seen in the interi-
or of northeastern Iceland. From the interior a strong
gradient to low coastal values is towards southeast.
On the other hand relatively high values reach the
north coast. Minimum values of 0.5°C are found
along the southeast coast. In western Iceland a rather
small difference is observed between coastal and
inland areas in July. Variations of standard deviation
are similar in June and August to those in July.
