ABSTRACT This quaiitative study was designed to gain insight into nurses’ perceptions of what influences the utilisation of research findings in practice. A grounded theory approach was adopted, based on in-depth interviews with four registered nurses working in a comprehensive Accident and Emergency department in a large urban hospitai in Britain. It emerged that many personal and professional issues miiitated against the nurses using research findings in practice and the categories that were considered important influencing issues in the utilisation process were; f) the nurse e.g. interest and knowledge, 2) the nursing profession e.g. research not professionally respected, 3) the working environment e.g. lack of time and managerial support, 4) research and practice e.g. the nature of research, 5) communication of research findings. The results indicate that research findings are hardly used by nurses in this A&E and the above categories were also interpreted as barriers of integrating research findings, as an inseparable part, into the A&E practice. 77. árg. 2001 15
