Útdráttur Fornleifauppgröfturinn sem fram fór tímabilið 2000-2012 á rústum klaustursins á Skriðu í Fljótsdal veitti nýja innsýn í lítt þekktan heim miðalda á Íslandi. Fram kom að við rekstur klaustursins var umfram annað tekið mið af evrópskri klaustur hefð og reynt af fremsta megni að hvika hvergi frá fastmótuðum reglum kaþólskrar kristni. Í grein inni er fjallað um upphaf, þróun og hrun kaþólsks klaustur lifnaðar í V-Evrópu en einn ig greint frá því hvernig viðhorf kaþólskra til dauðans og grund vallar boð- skapur þeirra endur speglast í þeim leifum sem fundust í rústum Skriðuklausturs. Þá verða tíundaðar ástæður þess að Sesselja Þorsteinsdóttir sýslumannsfrú tók þá ákvörðun að gefa jörð sína Skriðu til stofnunar klausturs en þær varpa ljósi á þá hugmyndafræði sem kaþólsk trú aðhyllist. Summary In 2002–2012, an archaeological investigation was undertaken of the ruins of an Augustinian monastery on the farm of Skriða in East Iceland that operated from 1493 to 1554. The excavation provided vastly new knowledge on monasticism in Iceland, as the prevailing view had long been that Icelandic monasteries functioned somewhat differently than their counterparts elsewhere in the Catholic world. The results from the investigations at Skriðuklaustur raises issues of Medieval monasticism in fringe places, such as the North Atlantic, as the site illustrates an example of how social systems can cross geographical and cultural borders without necessitating fundamental change. The leading thread throughout the article is Sesselja Þorsteinsdóttir, the sheriff´s wife, who gave her land at Skriða to establish a monastery with hospitalised activity, but her decision demonstrates the primary belief in monasticism in Iceland as elsewhere.
