found remarkably more genitives after the Reformation, and it seems
that these Bible translations promoted the use of án with the genitive in
Icelandic.
Around the post-Reformation period, the genitive seems to have
become the primary prepositional case of án. Although this study found
examples of án with all the oblique cases, very few accusative examples
were found after the 16th century. In contrast, án occurred sporadically
with the dative until the 20th century. Many of the datives from this peri-
od were frequent phrases in old texts, and it was thus concluded that the
selection of án with the dative did not reflect a pure substitution of the
genitive by the dative but appeared in fixed expressions, most likely
because of the authors’ preference for an archaic style. This is further
supported by the lack of the expression *án því að as the dative counter-
part of án þess að.
The case government of prepositions has rarely been the focus of
research on Icelandic from a historical perspective, and this study shows
that prepositional case can be an interesting topic for research in Old and
Modern Icelandic.
