verið málmur á þessum stað, hvorki málmdropar né gjall, deiglu-
brot eða þess háttar. En ekki afsannar það, að þarna hafi hafzt við
maður, sem hafði að atvinnu að smíða hluti þá ýmsa, sem þarna fund-
ust. Einkennilegast er staðarvalið. Að vísu er ekki ljóst, hvernig um-
hverfi hússins hefur verið á miðöldum, þo að trúlegt sé, að þá þegar
hafi það verið mjög blásið, og hefði það þó ekki þurft að gera smiðn-
um neitt til. Hitt er torskýrðara, hversu einangrað þetta hús er og
snautt að öllum mannvistarleifum öðrum. Þarna eru fá þau merki,
sem mannabyggð lætur venjulega eftir sig, mjög lítil aska og matar-
úrgangur. Þótt smiðurinn hefði verið einsetumaður og hírzt í þess-
um ótrúlega litla kofa, ættu slík merki ekki að leyna sér, ef ekki hefði
vistin staðið því skemur. Helzt verður að hugsa sér, að þarna hafi
einn maður hafzt við aðeins örskamma hríð, segjum eitt sumar eða
nokkra mánuði. Slík vist hefði ekki þurft að láta eftir sig nein veru-
leg merki. Verður nú um sinn að una við þessa skýringu, þótt henni
sé um margt áfátt, unz eitthvað kann að koma fram, sem varpar nýju
ljósi á þennan einkennilega fund.
SUMMARY
Recent Excavations on Reykjanes, Iceland.
In two places on the Reykjanes peninsula in Southwest-Iceland there are place-
names derived from kapella, i. e. chapel. They are Kapellan (The Chapel) in
Kapelluhraun south of the town of Hafnarfjörður and Kapellulág (Chapel’s Hol-
low) east of the fishing village of Grindavík. Unmistakable traces of human
activity are seen in both places. The National Museum in Reykjavík has recently
caused the remains to be excavated, the result being published in this paper.
1. Some time in the early Middle Ages, probably not long after the discovery
and colonization of Iceland, a volcanic eruption occurred in the mountain-ridge
of Reykjanes, sending a wide flow of rough lava to the north, eventually running
right out into the bay of Faxaflói. This lava flow completely blocked the road
leading to the outer farms and fishing stations of Reykjanes. Immediately after
the eruption had ceased and the lava mass had cooled off, a path was broken
through the new lava field, a path which is still visible and was used through
centuries. The path is very circuitous as lava tracks always are, and close to it,
in the middle of the field, are seen the remains of a tiny house, which is called
Kapellan (The Chapel). Hence the modern name of the lava, Kapelluhraun. The
