the origin of the name must remain unexplained. The numerous objects in such a
humble house are striking, not least because many of the objects are unparelleled
among Icelandic finds. The English coin might easily lead one to the conclusion
that this extraordinary find had something to do with the extensive trade of
English merchants in Iceland in the late Middle Ages. Perhaps this house was
simply a shop in which a merchant sold his goods — mostly small ornaments to
be sewn on clothes and belts — during his short summer visit to Iceland. But
when everything is considered this idea can hardly be sustained. It seems more
likely that the hut was the temporary workshop of a craftsman who specialized
in ornamental bronze plates, pins, buttons and things like that, fashionable at
the time indicated by the coin.
