Flugur, smágreinar og umrœðuefni
With this theory in mind, it seems tempting to suggest that the ve-
lar /k/ in the cases under consideration is “hidden” rather than deleted
m the conventional sense. To take a concrete example, the articulators
Ihat are activated in dðlskt ‘apathetic’ are, for the consonants, the
tongue tip in /d,l,s,t/ and the tongue body in /k/. The constriction
degree is closed for the stops, and narrow for the liquid and /s/. The
assumption is then that since gestures are dynamic they overlap, and
this overlap may result in assimilation or, as mentioned, hiding of a
gesture. This would mean that the velar could be articulatorily present
m Faroese and Icelandic examples of the sort discussed above but hid-
den by the surrounding tongue tip gestures. It would be interesting to
try to test this hypothesis empirically by tests of the sort described by
Browman and Goldstein (1987), for instance, but that is clearly
heyond the scope of this squib.
