Abstract
This article describes the role of an Icelandic-French dictionary focussing on the
expected users of such a dictionary. The existing dictionaries for the language pair,
Icelandic and French, are briefly presented, in particular the only published dictionary
with Icelandic as the source language and French as the target language, Islenzk-
frönsk orðabók (Boots 1950). The role of dictionaries according to their uses either
for production or reception of a foreign language is examined. The characteristics
of bilingual dictionaries are discussed, especially the conditions that equivalents
need to fulfil as well as the importance of meaning discrimination when more than
one equivalent is proposed for a given headword. The selection of headwords and
information types in bidirectional dictionaries are considered and the microstructure
of the entries. The possibilities and solutions that electronic dictionaries offer are taken
into account, for example regarding the user interface. In this context the Icelandic-
Scandinavian dictionary islex is considered as well as the French-English, English-
French dictionary Le Grand Robert & Collins. Examples are shown for an Icelandic-
French Dictionary (and elaborated entries are proposed in the appendix), where the
focus is on inclusion of more examples and collocations in order to illustrate the use
of equivalents in the target language.
