Ifølge Marlow hviler der ”et skær af flugt over alle hans [Jims, BK]
handlinger, et skær af impulsiv, spontan undvigen, af et spring ud
i det ukendte” (206). Et øjeblik tænker Marlow tilbage på ’Patna’-
episoden og føjer til: ”Den var som en skygge i lyset” (237). ’Patna’-
begivenheden og springet som objektiv kendsgerning er, selv efter
at Jim har opnået en næsten mytisk heltestatus i Patusan, ikke
overvundet, men eksisterer stadig som et indre sår i Jim. Under
Marlows besøg i Patusan siger Jim ved en lejlighed til ham:
’Jeg har nu været her i to år, og minsandten om jeg nu er i stand til at fore-
stille mig, at jeg skulle kunne leve noget andet sted! Den blotte tanke om
verden udenfor er nok til at gøre mig bange, for De véd jo godt’ – fortsatte
han med nedslagne øjne, […] ’ved jo godt, at jeg ikke har glemt, hvorfor
jeg kom hertil. Ikke endnu!’ (271f.).
I en anden karakteristisk tilståelse over for Marlow indrømmer Jim:
”Jeg taler om at blive det kvit – dette fordømte, som ligger bag min
bevidsthed … At glemme … Pokker tage mig, om jeg véd det!
Jeg kan tænke roligt på det” (272). Ved afskeden med Marlow er
det atter dette tema, der dukker op, om end i en varieret og mere
afslørende form. På Marlows konstatering af, at Jim har fået sin
chance, svarer denne:
’Har jeg?’, sagde han. ’Nå, ja, det har jeg vel. Jo, jeg har fået min selvtillid
tilbage – et godt navn – men undertiden ønsker jeg alligevel … Nej! Jeg
vil holde fast ved det, jeg har fået. Jeg kan ikke vente mere! Han rakte en
arm ud mod havet. ’Men ikke derude’. Han stampede med foden i sandet.
’Dette er min grænse, fordi intet mindre end dette kan accepteres’ (297).
Disse ord supplerer Jim med følgende indrømmelse:
’Jeg må fortsætte, fortsætte til mine dages ende med at holde hovedet
højt, i forvisningen om at intet kan skade mig. Jeg må holde fast ved deres
[befolkningens, BK] tro på mig, for at jeg kan føle mig sikker og – og …’
