måske aldrig mere skal få at se. For eksempel med – Dem’ (297).
Ved den definitive afsked – Marlow og Jim mødes ikke mere – stil-
ler Jim et sidste spørgsmål til Marlow: ”’Rejser De snart hjem?’”
(298). Spørgsmålet besvarer Marlow bekræftende, hvorefter Jim
med hævet stemme fremstammer: ”’Sig til dem …’” (298). Der op-
står en lille pause, hvorefter Jims allersidste ord falder: ”’Nej – ikke
noget!’” (298).
Disse udtalelser har konsekvenser for Jims eksistentielle valg.
Dette valg er ifølge Kierkegaard netop karakteriseret ved en for-
skydelse af det eksistentielle tyngdepunkt fra det ’udvortes’ til det
autentiske selv, altså ved en indre bevægelse, igennem hvilken man
erobrer ’saligheden’ i selvet, så alt, hvad der ikke korresponderer
med dette, er overvundet og mortificeret. Man falder som Steins
”pragtfulde sommerfugl” (191), der ”finder en lille forhøjning i
jordsmonnet og sidder stille på den” (191), til ro i sig selv og har
med uendelighedens lidenskab tilegnet sig sine eksistensbetingel-
ser, så alle andre muligheder er gledet ud af bevidstheden. I Harald
Kiddes mesterværk, romanen Helten, følger hovedpersonen Clemens
Bek i sin udvikling Kierkegaards valgfilosofi. Han er spærret inde
på øen Anholt, hvilket kan sammenlignes med Jims ophold i øriget
Patusan, men i modsætning til Jim lykkes det for Clemens Bek uden
noget som helst forbehold at løfte ”Øjnene mod den Grænse, der
var mig sat”,29 og dermed i Kierkegaards forstand at vælge de karge
eksistensbetingelser på Anholt: ”Nu var jeg på den øde Ø”.30 Dette
valg medfører for Clemens Bek, at han glemmer sine ”Drømme om
Sollandet, Sorgen over alt det af mit Bedste, jeg havde sendt ud bag
Havet, og som aldrig kom igen”.31
Mens Clemens Bek på Kierkegaards præmisser virkelig er an-
kommet på Anholt og er til stede på øen, så alt det bedste i hans liv,
der hører illusionerne eller fortiden til, er gledet ud af bevidstheden,
viser Jims udsagn i afskeden med Marlow, at det på trods af hans
