Norðdahl, former director of planning for the munici- pality of Kópavogur, gives his view of some of the major flaws in the former regional plan for the capital area, which was ratified in 1968. P. 53 - THE CAPITAL’S REGIONAL PLAN Stefán Thors, director of planning for the Icelandic government, here discusses the current regional plan for the capital and stresses the im- portance of it being implemented effectively. P. 58 - ADDITION ONTO THE MURCIA CITY HALL This article by art historian Dr. Halldóra Arnardóttir discusses in some detail a recent addition built onto the city hall in Murcia, Spain. The architect was Rafael Moneos. P. 63 - DEVELOPMENTAL PLAN FOR REYKJAVÍK CITY CENTER In 1997 the city of Reykjavík and the Central Reykjavík Association formed a partnership to create a developmental plan for the city of Reykjavík. In this article, project manager Anna Margrét Guðjóns- dóttir defines just what this entails, discusses why such a plan is needed and also describes its first phase. P. 68 - THE ICELANDIC DESIGN MUSEUM On October 15 the first exhibition was opened in the newly-founded Icelandic Design Museum, in Garðabær. On that occasion the museum hosted a symposium on the role of design museums in the present and future. This article traces the process leading to the opening of the museum and dis- cusses new opportunities for Icelandic design and the status at the dawn of a new millennium. P. 72 - COMMON DATABASE FOR REYKJAVÍK ORGANIZA- TIONS In this article engineer Heiðar Þ. Hallgrímsson describes a common database which now exists on the Internet for several municipal orga- nizations. These are The Reykjavík Municipal Power Company, The Reykjavík Municipal Water Works, The Reykjavík City Planning Office and The National Telephone Company. The article discusses, among other things, how to go about obtaining documents from the database, which can be accessed at www.rvk.is/lukr P. 77 - NEW B.M. VALLÁ BUILDING This article focuses on a new build- ing for the offices of the company B.M. Vallá, in Reykjavík. The building was designed by Omar Sighurbergsson and the architectur- al design firm ÚTI og INNI. Details of the design work, the surround- ings, ideology and so on are given, supplemented by photographs. P. 82 - INFORMATION CEN- TRE AT ÞINGVELLIR Last July the government of Iceland held a competition for the design of a new information centre at the Þingvellir national park. First prize was awarded to the architecture design firm Gláma/Kím. The article discusses the particulars of the award-winning proposal. P. 87 - SOIL RECLAMATION Here Jóna Fanney Friðriksdóttir writes about the work of the soil reclamation association Gróður fyrir fólk í landnámi Ingólfs, of which she is director. She points out the crucial importance of soil recla- mation for Iceland and also discuss- es the environmental project SKIL 21, which aims at recycling bio- degradable waste. P. 91 - KRINGLAN - THE NEW ADDITION This article gives details of the design and construction of the new addition to the Kringlan shopping mall, in Reykjavík. Architectural work was conducted by the firm Teiknistofa Halldórs Guðmunds- sonar. ■ 57
