NÁTTÚRUFRÆÐINGURINN
of hot sjsrings in Hveravellir. The determination of the exact limit of the
growth turned out to be very difficult, and mainly for two reasons: First, the
temperature of the water, in those places where the growth limits are searched
for, is very unsteady, because of the variation in the waterflow and the clifferent
rapidity of tlie cooling of the water. Secondly, it is often impossible to decide
whether the thalli found in those places are living or dead. This has to be
decided by means of cultivation of the thalli. So far it can be said, that the
maximal temperature for the growth of the species Hapalosiphon laminosam
and Phormidiam laminosum lies between 58° and 60° C under circumstances
as tliey were in Hveravellir.
Microscopical examinations of a siliceous sinter from several liot springs in
Hveravellir revealed a content of petrified tlialli, having a shape reminding of
that of the two species of bluegreen algae, Hap. laminosum and Phorm. lamin-
osum, found in the outlets of the springs (Fig. 5—7). Any connection between
the formation of the peculiar sinter terraces (Fig. 2—4) and their content of
petrified thalli could not be found. The role of the algae in these sinterterraces
seems to be passiv.
A great number of silica spheres ol various sizes (ca. 0.5—10 p) were founcl in
tlie sinter around a hot spring containing water of a blue colour (Fig. 8). This
blue colour is caused by silica in colloidal form (T. Einarsson, 1942) wherefrom
the silica spheres inost likely originate.

I. „Hiís og heimili."
Flest landspendýr eiga sér einhverskonar hæli eða heimili. Þang-
að leita þan reglnlega svelnstaðar, skjóls eða til að tímgast. Eigandi
straumnum. Getur synt á bakinu með ungann á kviðnum. Selir
sofa bæði á landi og í sjó. Weddel-selurinn í suðurheimskautslönd-
