building of His Kingdom, if our nations are to prosper in the arts of
peace. Peace on earth can become an abiding reality only amongst men
of goodwill. To this end, every knee must bow before Jesus Christ and
acknowledge Him as Lord and Savior. To this consummation, so devoutly
to be desired, we of the Icelandic Lutheran Synod and of the Lutheran
Women’s League, must give our enthusiastic service. We who owe the
allegiance of citizenship to the United States or to Canada and also to
the Kingdom of God must devote our every effort to consecrated service
for God and humanity. Head, heart and hand must work together in a
trinity of Christian effort for the preparation of the Gospel of abiding
peace. In so doing we shall best serve the cause for which the lives of
our young servicemen were laid down.
What better monument, what more fitting and adequate memoriaf
could we then raise to those heroic dead from our own hearths and
homes than the purpose and effort for which this Memorial Hall has
been built? Here within these walls consecrated men and women will
labor, under the guidance and power of God’s Holy Spirit, to instil with-
in the hearts and minds of our children and young people the nurture
and admonition of the Lord. Here within these walls God’s voice will
“speak to us that we may speak in living echoes of his tone”, teaching
our Christian pupils—
... “to bear the yoke in youth,
With steadfastness and careful truth;
That, in our time, His grace may give
The truth whereby the nations live.
Teach us to rule ourselves always
Controlled and cleanly night and day;
That we may bring, if need arise,
No maimed or worthless sacrifice.
Teach us delight in simple things,
And joy that has no bitter things;
Forgiveness free of evil done,
And love to all men ’neath the sun.”
