SUMMARY
A study of prevalence of senile cataract and
incidence of cataract operations of first eye among
population 50 years and older in lceland.
The aims of the present study were: Prevalence
estimate for senile cataract in the age group 50
years and older, incidence of cataract operatiohs of
the first eye and the duration of hospital stay after
operation.
The prevalence estimate was carried out at the
Borgarnes Medical District and the diagnostic
criteria of the Framingham eye study were adopted.
The overall prevalence of senile cataracts or
aphakia was 9.5% (7.9 males, 11.2 females) in the
age group 50 years and older. The upward trend
with age is significant, and so are the higher rates
for women found in the Framingham study as com-
pared with men.
The estimated number of senile cataract patients
in lceland is according to the prevalence rate in the
Borgarnes Eye Study about 4000.
Lens extraction on the first eye gives an idea on
the risk of operation of the total population and the
estimated number of cataract patients. The average
number of lens extraction in the first eye of the
population 50 years and older is 140. The incidence
of cataract extractions has been stable in recent
years in lceland. The overall incidence in this age
group is 27.4 per 10.000 inhabitants (male 25.0,
female 29.6). Only 0.27 per cent of the total
population 50 years and older are operated for
cataract of first eye each year and about 3-4 percent
of the estimated patients with cataract in the same
age group.
