Report on Sea Ice off the Icelandic Coasts
Oct. 1965—Sept. 1966
Loose drift ice xuas observed on several occas-
ions very close to the northern proxnoxitories of
Iceland without, hoiuever, blocking the coast or
having any serious effect on coastal shipping
throughout the year.
As might be expected temperatures of the
sea and the air were unnormally low after the
blockade of sea ice from the end of February
to Mav 1965. Most of the winter 1965/66 was
characterized by persistent NE-erly winds and
cold.
Below are quoted the monthly means and
deviations from normals at the Cape Horn
Lighthouse, Stykkishólmur and Raufarhöfn.

OCTOBER 1965
On Oct. 6 the edge of a considerable ice
field was only 20 miles ATW of Cape Straumnes
tuhile on ihe 15th no ice was sighted fro?n an
air plane within 90 miles off the NW-ern
coasts.
8/io The Coastal Guarcl reports an ice edge
running approximately from 6650/2400 to
6640/2340 to 6645/2320 to 6655/2320 to 6650/
2220 to 6710/2200.
i2-i3/i0 Scattered blocks sighted 20—30 miles
ESE from Cape Horn, drifting slowly E-wards
and melting.
is/io An iceflight by SIF to 60 miles off
Cape Straumnes and off the mouth of Huna-
flói with a clear view to 90 miles out. No drift
ice was sighted within this distance, only three
icebergs: One 14 miles N of Kögur, second 24
miles N of Hælavíkurbjarg and the third one
45 NE of Cape Horn.
18/io Iceberg 60 m high and 200 m in dia-
meter about 6655/2105. — Another iceberg 50
m high and 250 m in diameter at 6640/2226.
These icebergs were drifting SW and were only
3—4 miles off Cape Horn on October 23, drift-
ing slowly E and W for tidal currents. Finally
the bergs drifted towards Selsker, Húnaflói,
where they broke to pieces..
