Some of the hills show a marked ‘step’ profile, as, for instance, the two Saudafells wlien viewed from the south-west. The dominant trend of the lines of escarp- ments is north-east to south-west, with tlie steepest slopes facing north-west. In some places, especially on the feature with summit 574 m, just south of Reykjavatn, the escarpments be- come channels incised through the hills. Some of the escarpments were examined in detail, especially those on a line from Stóralón (S 408 on Fig. 1) through Mordísarhæd, over Arnarvatnsliædir to Arnarvatn stóra.
