No altitudes, therefore, were determined between the ab- lation stakes (Ab, Fig. 1) and the front edge of the glacier. Altitudes were determined along the crevassed lateral slopes of the snout at intervals of about 10— 15 m along lines spaced 25 — 75 m apart, the precise spacing being dictated by the positions of the crevasses. Be- cause the central lower portion of the glacier could not be surveyed from any of the off- glacier stations a station was established on the ice (Ice Eu). During the survey the positions of B.S.E.S. Stations 7 and 8 and two ablation stakes were resurveyed and eight new 12 JÖKULL 31. ÁR
