diameter inlet and outlet pipes, was lowered
into a turbulent section of the stream at
Station 2 (Fig. 1). This sampling procedure
ensured a depth-integrated sample and was
repeated each time the stage was recorded.
Detailed hourly measurements conducted
over 48 hours between llth and 13th July
indicated that the thrice daily measurements
were acceptable estimates of both discharge
and suspended sediment concentrations. Bed
load was not measured. On filtering, the
papers were ashed and the inorganic residue
weighed. Solute concentration was estimated
from temperature corrected conductivity
measurements carried out on the now clear
filtrate, and in-field titration for total hard-
ness (Ca + +, Mg + +) of the meltwater was
conducted following Schwartzenbach (1957).
RESULTS
The data obtained are shown in Fig. 2.
Relatively high wind velocities were recorded
only once in the study period, on 16th July. No
distinct overall pattern in air temperature
fluctuations emerged over the sample period,
although a strong diurnal pattern was
