Við gerð gróðurkortsins 1978 voru
merkt sérstaklega þau svæði, sem voru of
grýtt til ræktunar, og eru þau um 870
hektarar, fjórðungur afflatarmáli hólfsins.
Grjótið takmarkar ræktun minna í neðra
hæðarbeltinu, um 9%, en mun meiraí efra
beltinu, um 31%. Þessar tölur segja þó
ekki nema hálfa sögu um ræktunarhæfni
ÞAK.KARORÐ
Verkefnið var unnið undir leiðsögn Gylfa
Más Guðbergssonar dósents í landafræði
við Jarðfræðiskor Háskóla Islands. Fram-
kvæmdin var háð fyrirgreiðslu Rann-
sóknastofnunar landbúnaðarins, er lagði
til öll helstu gögn og tæki, en þar naut
höfundur sérstaklega aðstoðar Ingva Þor-

Changes in the vegetation cover of the Thjórsár-
dalur area.

This treatise deals with changes in the
vegetative cover of the Thjorsardalur area
from 1960 to 1977. The area has been
protected from grazing since 1938.
The Agricultural Research Institute
prepared a vegetation map of the area in
1960. In 1977 the author prepared a cor-
responding vegetation map and compared
it with the previous one.
During the 17 year interval in question
several factors have influenced the vege-
tation changes in the area, such as pro-
tection from grazing, volcanic ash de-
posits, the establishments of fertilized
grass fields, and construction ofroads and

It is not possible, based on available
information, to determine the long range
effects of the nearby eruption in 1970, and
on the vegetative cover. It is, on the other
hand, evident that the establishment of
fertilized grass fields far more than com-
pensates for vegetative areas taken up by
the mentioned construction projects.
Protection of the area from grazing has
led to a greatly improved vegetative cover:
areas previously denuded have acquired a
plant cover, and the vegetation is now in
general more varied and proliflc. Thus,
the grazing capacity of the area has in-
creased considerably. These improve-
ments contribute more to the productive
capacity of the area than recent fertilized
grass fields.
