SUMMARY
Procurement of larch seed from
Archangel district
The most commonly planted exotics in Ice-
landic forestry to-day are the Russian and
Siberian larches (Larix sukaczewi Dylis and L.si-
birica Ledeb.j. These closely-related species
were, until 1947, classified together under L.
sibirica. They were introduced to Iceland during
the early 20th century and have proved surpris-
ingly successful in Iceland’s maritime climate,
despite their continental origins. Recent surveys
of larch plantations have shown that Russian
larch (RL) of North Archangel origins is superior
in form and performance than other RL proven-
ances or the Siberian species and should be used
in preference to them in afforestation projects. In
1988 and 1989 some 818.000 larch forest seedlings
were produced in Icelandic nurseries, about 27%
of the total production.
Generally, it has been difficult to obtain seed
direct from Archangel district (table 1), and
apart from 10 kg in 1984 no seed was imported
direct from that district during the period 1969-
89. During those years seed of Archangel origin
was imported from Scandinavia, at first collected
from plantations and then during the last two dec-
ades from seed orchards established during the
1950’s and early 60’s (tables 2, 3 & 4). From these
tables it can be seen that some 390 kg of Arch-
angel larch seed has been imported to Iceland.
Due to the difficulties in collection - irregular
and unpredictable cropping, natural seed stands
poorly accessible, dependence on seed orchards
- seed of the North Archangel larch is expensive.
As larch is expected to be the major species in the
reforestation programme, seed procuration is
and will be a considerable expenditure in Ice-
landic forestry.
