old — tær fyri 1588 og 1590. Og hóast nakrar broytingar
eru hendar í jarðabókunum fyri tey fyrstu 3 árini av 17. old,
kann hon óivað yvirhovur góðtakast upp til (og við) 1602—

heilt onnur — ein hroyting er hend, helst so við og við, við

SUMMARY
The article attempls (1) to calcuilate Ithe size of the Faroese
poipulation about tlhe year 1600 on tlhe basis of the rent-roll of
1584, (2) to determine the division of landed property among
the landowners (tenants of the Danish Crown and freeholders)
at the same time and according to the source mentioned.
As to the main part of the work we arrive at a population of
some 3180 about 1600. The method employed in reaohing this
number has been to copy aind number all names on the rent-roll
(coilumn A); tlhis gives a total faumber oíf 532 names (p. 9).
However, a closer examination of t'hese names discloses the fact
that a great number of them are mentioned twice or even
several times, hence a reduction in the total number of entries
is necessary. This has been made in column B, and the actual
number of maintainers tums out to be 436 (p. 33). Tlhe Iatter
may be isupposed to represent a family of 5 persons eadh. Result:
2180 persons. But, in addition, a probable number of farm workers,
male and female, and pensioners must be taken into aocount —
a num'ber wlhich has been estimated at about 1000. Accordingly
the total Faroese population about 1600 will 'be as mentioned
above.
