ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and needs of non- traditional and traditional students in the early childhood program at Iceland University of Education. The participants, all women, entered the program in the first three years (1998-2000) after it had been moved into higher education. To compare the experiences and needs of non-traditional and traditional students the graduating class was interviewed in homogenous focus groups based on their age group and previous education. The interviews were semi-structured focusing on issues related to educational choice, social support, course work and available support systems within and outside the university. Most of the student had selected early childhood education after having worked in preschools for some period of time. The results show that the two groups viewed their educational experiences differently. The non- traditional students experienced greater anxiety related to academic issues and they had greater need for support from other students and staff. Many of them had difficulties in combining the role of a mother and a housewife and academic demands. However, at the end of their studies they had a greater sense of personal accomplishment than traditional students. The implications of these results for policy making in the area of admission and special needs of non-traditional students are discussed in the light of theories about the importance of diversity in higher education.
