SUMMARY
SNOW AVALANCESINICELAND DURING THE
WINTER 1989-1990
Between four and five hundred avalanches were
recorded. No fatalities occurred although there were
at least four very close calls. Buildingshad to be evac-
uated in four towns because of potential avalanches. A
house and a machine shed were destroyed on the East
coast. People had been living in the house until a few
weeks earlier. Two vehicles were destroyed and two
more damaged. A summer cottage was severely dam-
aged and trees and other vegetation was destroyed at
several locations. Power lines were cut on several oc-
casions and the hydro-power stations at Búrfell was hit
by an avalanche and suffered some damage. As usual
there were numerous road closures due to avalanches.
