Summary Preservation of Icelandic Web Sites Many nations have realised that in order to salvage their national cultural heritage they must start systematically collecting information published on the Internet. The original idea to collect, organize and make available snap- shots of web sites throughout their history can be traced back to 1996 when the Internet Archive was established. In January 2003 a new law was passed in Iceland, The Mandatory deposit act which requires the National and University Library to collect all published material on the Internet and make it publicly available in a national web archive. Knowing this was in their future the National Library in 1998 took part in a Nordic project called the Nordic Web Archive (NWA). The project involves develop- ment and testing of software that would collect and organise all web sites available in each country. The project continues as NWA II and is to come to a close in April 2004. Already 7,5 million documents have been collected from Icelandic web sites using a „web site harvester" called Nedlib.
