WORKS IN ENGLISH FROM AND ABOUT THE FAROEISLANDS
AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
correct a number of entries in the bibliogra-
phy. The new titles and the corrections/ad-
ditions conceming entries from the biblio-
graphy are collected in a supplement that
we present in the following pages.
The present supplement consists of two
parts, a »new titles« section and an »addi-
tions/corrections« section, in which new in-
formation referring to entries in the bibli-
ography is given. It comprises 781 new ti-
tles and 59 new reviews assigned to certain
titles, totalling 840 new entries. The over-
all number of entries in the bibliography
and the supplement has thus reached 3,505
items. Moreover, we were able to provide
additions and/or corrections for 25 entries
of the bibliography in the second part of the
supplement. The supplement is organised
in the same way as the bibliography. All
entries in the first part of the supplement
are listed in alphabetical order and num-
bered continuously. The Scandinavian
characters á/Á, æ/Æ, ø/Ø, ð/Ð were incor-
porated into the alphabet and were treated
as aa/AA, ae/Ae, oe/Oe and d/D. Reviews
referring to a particular title are given un-
demeath the title indicated by Reviewed
in. These reviews are not numbered. In
some cases, biographical sketches are giv-
en; these are indicated by Biographical
note. Wherever possible and necessary,
annotations are given in triangular brackets
<> undemeath the respective title entry.
These annotations sometimes contain
cross-references conceming other titles
dealing with the same subject either in the
bibliography or in the supplement itself.
These cross-references are indicated by “cf.
bibliography no. ...” or “cf. supplement no.
...”. In the second part of the supplement,
the numbers given in front of each entry re-
fer to the respective numbers in the bibliog-
raphy to enable the reader to use them as
comprehensively as possible. Additions
and/or corrections are given in italics.
As the entries in the supplement are not
listed by subject, but in alphabetical order
only, there are two indices that enable the
reader to make the best possible use of the
entries: a »subject index« and an »index of
authors, editors, translators, photographers
and il!ustrators«. In the latter index, editors
are indicated by the letter (e), translators by
the letter (t), photographers by the letter (p)
and illustrators by the letter (i). Authors are
not so indicated. The two indices given re-
fer only to the first part of the supplement,
not to the additions/corrections section.
In the preface to our 1997 bibliography,
we expressed our hope »... that this biblio-
graphy will be of value for all those who are
interested in the Faroe Islands and that it
will contribute a little to arouse and deepen
the interest in the tiny, but lively nation in
the North Atlantic and in its courageous,
loveable, and hospitable inhabitants.« We
also hope that this supplement will improve
the usefulness of the bibliography even fur-
ther.
The present supplement could not have
been written without the help and advice of
many contributors both within and outside
the Faroe Islands, for which we would like
to thank each and every one of them very
much. We are particularly indebted to
Dorete Bloch of the Zoological Department
of the Museum of Natural History in Tórs-
havn; to Martin Næs and his ever helpful
