<"Genetic studies conceming psychiatric illnesses have for
some years created hope for new insight in mental illness.
Isolated populations may offer a new approach. Here, the
number of different alleles and mutations may be fewer and
therefore more easy to detect. Such models have been de-
veloped for patients in the Faroe Islands. The first illness to
study has been bipolar disorder, or manic-depressive ill-

parkinsonism and 82 with PD were found. The results were
compared to those stated in íhe county of Rogaland, Nor-
way and found to be significantly different in that the age-
adjusted prevalence of PD in the Faroes was 183.3 com-
pared to only 110.9 per 100.000 inhabitants in Rogaland>
