models, one assuming that continental extension and rifting
opened the Rockall Trough and the Faeroe-Shetland Chan-

ever since. The second model assumes that the Rockall-
Faeroe region rifted in the Cretaceous and was uniformly
uplifted in the late Palaeocene due to heating of the lithos-

Hebridean Birlinn, Nyvaig and Lymphad
with a Foreword by Norman MacLeod of Svardal.
Peel, Isle of Man (The Mansk Svenska Publishing
Co., Ltd.) 1997, 29 pp., illustrations
<"The object of this booklet is to deduce the dimensions of,
and to provide certain other information about, the He-
bridean galley (which term in this article includes nyvaigs
and lymphads). In order to do so, it has been considered de-
sirable to give, in the first case, a short description of each
of the Hebridean vessels and then to compare the Hebridean
galleys with their Irish counterparts. The history of the He-
bridean craft is traced from their Viking ancestors through
the relevant Faroese vessels. It is only after doing so that it
is possible to deduce the dimensions of the Hebridean ves-
sels." Of particular interest are pp. 19-22, "The Faroese
Seksaringur and Teinaringur" with illustration "Diagram
and specifications of Faroese Sekserengad" on pp. 16-17>
