In 1930 the National Museum of Iceland took over the old house and
in 1958—1960 gave it a thorough reparation.
The author of this paper shows that the house was rebuilt for the last
time about 1655, so that it is at least 300 years old as it is now. Moreover
the author is of the opinion that when rebuilt about 1655 the cliurch
was given much the samc shape and size as it had before.
The chapel at Núpsstaður is only 5.2 m long and 2.2—2.5 m wide. The
walls are very thick and built from rough slones and turf. The roof has
turf on the outside but the beams are protected by a cover of flagstones,
a detail well known in oldfashioned houses in the south of Iceland. The
interior of the chapel is poor hut tlie outside look is quite picturesque and
fits well into the landscape. In every respect the house is a good representa-
tive for old Icelandic building customs and being one of the oldest houses
in tlie country it deserves to be protected for the future.

9) Ilannes Þorsteinsson segir í ævisögu Magnúsar Péturssonar (Blanda
IV, hls. 196—197), að misþokki milli biskups og Magnúsar muni hafa
jafnazt sumarið 1657, en naumast mun svo hafa verið í öllum greinum.
Sem dæmi má nefna, að þegar biskup vísiterar á Kálfafelli í sept.
1641 verður hann þess var, að séra Magnús hefur ekki skilað af sér
ýmsum eignum kirkjunnar þar og skipar prestinum á staðnum, séra
Þórði Guðmundssyni, að innheimta það, eða eins og segir í vísitazí-
unni: „Krefja og til dóms og laga að sækja--------— svo kirkjurnar
séu ekki eilíflega ræntar af þeim er sízt skyldi, einkanlega kristnum
mönnum og sérdeilis prestunum sjálfum.“ (Bps. A II, 8, bls. 139).
Illa gekk innheimtan, og árið 1663 er biskup enn að ámálga við Kálfa-
fellsprest að þvinga séra Magnús til að gera full skil.
