SUMMARY Some Electrolytes, Hormones and other Substances in the Blood of Fin Whales of the Coast of Iceland by Matthías Kjeld and Arndís Theodórsdóttir Rannsókn 6, Rannsóknastofa Landspítalans, The University Hospital, IS-101 REYKJAVÍK, Iceland and Domus Medica Laboratory, Domus Medica, Egilsgötu 3, IS-101 REYKJA VÍK, Iceland Several electrolytes (Na, Cl, K, Ca), creatinine, urea, uric acid, total protein, cholestrol, triglycerides, cortisol and al- dosterone were measured in the serum of fin whales which had been caught off the coast of Iceland. Blood samples were tak- en postmortem from a fluke vessel at sea, immediately after the animal had been brought alongside the ship. Measurements for Na, K, Cl, urea, pH and osmolality were also done on urine apsirated from the bladder at the whaling station. The mean serum electrolyte (Na, K, CI) levels were found to be a little higher than those in terrestrial mammals. Serum calci- um, creatinine and protein levels were similar, while those of urea and uric acid in the whales were 6 times higher and 20 times lower respectively tlian in terrestrial mammals. Cholesterol levels were similar and triglyceride levels 2-3 times higher than those of a fasting man. Serum cortisol levels were 15 times low- 153
