staðar á Vatnsnesi, eða í næsta nágrenni þess á sumrin. Ef svo væri er ekki fjarri lagi að álykta að besti tíminn til talninga á landsel sé að sumarlagi á tímabilinu júní-ágúst. Þá fást líklegast ábyggilegustu upplýsingamar um þéttleika landsela við landið og um stofnstærðarbreytingar á milli ára. Hingað til hafa (alningar landsela úr lofti farið fram í ágústmánuði og stundum teygst fram í september, ef veður hafa hamlað flugi (Erlingur Hauksson 1992). SUMMARY Seasonal pattern of hauling-out of common seals (Phoca vitulina L.) on Vatnsnes, NW-Iceland by Erlingur Hauksson lcelandic Fisheries Laboratories Skúlagata 4 IS-IOI REYKJAVÍK lceland Maximum numbers of common seals occured in Hindisvík and Selland in lhe summertime, May-July, but in Sigríðarstaðaós during spring and autumn. The different pallcrns of hauling-out of common seals on the shores of Selland and in Hindisvík compared to Sigríðarstaðaós implies that the common seals group in Sigríðarstaðaós in the spring, before dis- persing to other places on Vatnsnes to breed, mate and molt. Also, they seem to group in the autumn or early winter in Sigríðarstaðaós, presumably after mating and molting. Tliis behaviour pattern of the common seals on Vatnsnes has to be tested further, by following marked animals or naturally marked identi- fiable individuals of the seal herds in the area, or by using VHF-telemetry techniques. 41
