174 LÆKNABLAÐIÐ with an oral examination which would be a part of the final examination. It had not been decided, however ,how the teeaching should be performed, and in 1973 the Faculty of Medi- cine appointed a committee to make recom- mendations about requirements of a new de- partment and methods of teaching. This com- mittee recommended that the teaching of General Practice should start in the 3rd year and should be performed in health eentres. It is also recommended that the University acqui- res a health center for teaching purposes. It has not yet been decided how or when the Faculty will take up teaching in general prac- tice, hence the appointment of the present committee. D The committee has reviewed reports on teaching of Gensral Practice in Britain, Den- mark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Canada and The United States, and also recent definition of the role of general practice. E Recoviviendations It is recommended that the teaching in gene- ral practice at the University of Iceland shouid start in the 2nd year and should continue through 4th, 5th and 6th year with increasing cmphasis on clinicial aspects and problem- solving, and always in close connection with teaching in Public Health and Hygienies as well as tradional Surgery of Medicine. The main objects of teaching would be: 1. To train the student in reaching a diagnosis by taking into aecount simultaneously the patients' domestic, social and psychological state. 1. To teach him about diseasss that are rarely ssen in hospital, but account for consider- able ailment in general. 3. To train the student in the management of chronic disease. 4. To train the student in team-work and let him familiarise himself with the role of such teamwork in the management of patients outside hospitals. 5. To assure the students’ interest in primary health care, and further training in general practice. It is recommended that teaching in General Practice should be based in á health centre, run by the university. Until such a centre is available, other health centers should be used. To begin with two health centres could be used, each taking groups of 4-5 students. In this way the two health centres could cope with the teaching of students in the 6th year. It is foreseeable, however, that as soon as teaching of 2nd year students is started, no less than 4 health centres are required, and each centre should have at least one parttime teacher (lecturer or senior lecturer). A professor of General Practice is clearly needed in the near future to coordinate the teaching in General Practice, to organize and carry the responsibility for ressarch, to organ- ize post-graduate training etc. The pictures show how the committee thinks it feasible to fit the teaching of General Practice into the present curriculum, starting in the 2nd year.
