The comparison of these health districts shows that the
number of contacts with each health center equals on the
average five to six contacts/individual per year and
85-90% of the population contacts the health center
each year. Reasons for contacting were iatrotropic
symptoms (32-49%), followup (15-20%), prescriptions
(14-25%), preventive practice (7-14%), accidents (2-3%)
and all other reasons (10-13%). The most common
diagnostic categories are shown in table II, diagnoses
from the cardiovascular and respiratory system being
the most common. Prescriptions are the most common
solution for each contact in all health centers, eqtialling
47-50% of all contacts made and 1.2-1.4 prescriptions
on the average each time. Other solutions were
expectancy, instruction, advice and therapeutic
interview (20-36% of all contacts), all investigations
(12-25% of all contacts), preventive practice (7-23% of
all contacts), letter, form, referral and hospitalization
(6-11% of all contacts) and minor surgery and/or local
anaestesia (5-14% of all contacts).
Other studies (6-10) in the Icelandic Iiterature do not
have the comparability of those five health centers, but
in some aspects show the same general trend.
The Egilsstaðir-medical record is computerized which
gives the opportunity to collect enormous data on
general health and communication of the population
with the Health Centers in various locations. At four
health centers (1, 2, 4, 5) out of five in this article the
data is collected according to the Egilsstaðir-medical
record.
To be able to develop the Egilsstaðir-medical record
further and use it in every day practice more feedback is
necessary from the many places that already have
started to use it. The use of one type of medical record
for Iceland could make the collected data compatible
and would create enormous opportunity for scientific
work.
