ÁGRIP Margir framhlaupsjöklar eru ekki þekktir sem slíkir vegna þess að hlaupin geta verið stutt og koma oft ekki fram í athugunum frá gervihnöttum eða jörðu niðri. Hér er greint frá fyrsta framhlaupi sem sög- um fer af í Kverkjökli sem er skriðjökull í norðan- verðum Vatnajökli. Þar með bætist tiltölulega stutt- ur, mjór og brattur jökull, sem svipar til jökla í Ölp- unum, við þekkta framhlaupsjökla á Íslandi. Fram- hlaupið varð eftir að jökullinn hafði hörfað um nokk- urra áratuga skeið og hafði hraði hörfunarinnar auk- ist síðustu árin fyrir hlaupið. Framhlaupið hófst eftir 2008, nokkru fyrir jökulhlaup úr lóninu Gengissigi í vestanverðum jöklinum árið 2013. Framhlaupið var enn yfirstandandi árið 2013. Lækkun yfirborðs jök- ulsins á ákomusvæðinu var allt að 20 m og var mest áberandi þar sem ísþykktin er >100 m. Breytingar á yfirborðshæð, framgangur sporðsins og breytingar á skriðhraða jökulsins benda til einnar framhlaupslotu. Framgangur sporðsins að norðan- og sunnanverðu var mismunandi og benda ummerki framhlaupsins þar til þess að það hafi gengið inn í sem næst kyrrstæðan ís við norðanverðan sporðinn.
