SUMMARY
Species and varieúes of Kale and rape and
seed rates of these crops.

Experiments on a number of species and
varieties of kale and rape were carried out
during the years 1957—1972 at Akureyri,
Hólar, Hvanneyri, Reykhólar, Sámsstaðir and
Skriðuklaustur Experimental Stations. The
rape varieties Silona and Rape Kale were the
most common in these experiments and they
frequently proved to be high yielding. In 4
experiments the yields of leaves and stems
were determined. The mean percentage of
leaves was found to be 63,8 and 78,8 for
marrow-stem kale and rape, respectively. The
dry matter content of stems was higher than
that of leaves in all varieties. Yet in marrow-
stem kale this difference was small. The
leaves were found to have higher contents of
protein, Ca and P than the stems.
All the varieties had high contents of
protein and particularly of Ca.
Experiments on the seed rates of kale and
rape were carried out during the years 1957
—1965 at Akureyri, Hólar, Hvanneyri og
Reykhólar Experimental Stations. When the
seed was broadcast the highest rates of 7 or
9 kg seed per hectare normally produced the
highest yields. Drilling the seed either pro-
duced higher or lower yields than broad-
casting it. Drilled and thinned plots produced
lower yields than drilled unthinned plots.
