Last winter (1931—1932) a medical lecturer in the Universitv of Iceland, Mr. Niels Dungal, made by means of Schick's test a very instructive investigation into the immunitv of school-children in Reykjavik against diphteria, and wrote an essay on the matter, which appears as Part III. of this book. He gives an account of the result of his investigation in the following survey: Schick tests performed on 814 children from 8—14 years old in Reykjavik gave the following results: 1) Of the whole number 81,9% reacted positively, 18,1% showing negative reactions. 2) There is only a slight increase in negative reactions up to 12 years age, followed by a sudden rise after finishing the llth year, ihe number of negatives rising from 17,2% at 11 years to 37,5% at the age of 13. 3) Diphtheria has been practically unknown in Reykjavik during the last six years, and before that time rare for some years, a sudden rise in 1920 and 1921 excepted. 4) It is suggested that the sudden rise in Schick negatives above the age of 12 years may he explained hv this wave of diphtheria 10 years ago, when the age-groups now showing a higher percentage of immunitv have just l>een 2 vears of age or more, i. e. beginning to mingle more freely with other persons and accordingly more ex- posed to the disease than younger children.
