the country. Even during the 1850’s it remained negligible, but
in the last four decades of the i9th century, and in the beginning
of the 20th, a very considerable emigration took place. The period
of large-scale emigration may be said to comprise the fifty years
from 1865 to 1915, during which the average annual emigration
was about 26,000, and the average annual net loss due to emigra-
tion 21,000, or 4.4 per 1000 of the population. The relative
emigration figures in the 1860’s and the 1870’s averaged 3.8 per
1000. During the 1880’s this figure rose to 8.4 per 1000. During
the following two decades it averaged a little over 5 per 1000,
and during the period 1910—30 a little more than 2 per 1000.
In the 1930’s the emigration was insignificant, and as immigra-
tion remained at a fairly constant level, the result was a small
excess of immigrants.
