their number may be estimated at between 500,000 and one mil-
lion. Altogether, there are thus in the U.S.A. probably between
2 and 2/2 million persons of pure or mixed Swedish extraction.
In Canada there are an additional 100,000. Of the total white
population of the United States, persons of pure or mixed Swedish
extraction constitute about 2 per cent.
Of the 595,000 pure Swedes living in theUnitedStates in 1930,
166,000 are found in the North-Eastern parts of the Middle
West. Of these, again, 111,000 are found in Illinois, 24,000 in
Michigan, and 19,000 in Wisconsin. In the North-Western parts
of the Middle West there are 148,000, including 91,000 in
Minnesota, 17,000 in Iowa, and 14,000 in Nebraska. Among the
