as the oil and vinegar bottles designed by Rafael
Marquina in 1961 (pictured) and the light designed in
1957 by architect Juan Antoni Coderch de Sentmenat
(pictured).
Dr. Arnardóttir goes on to discuss the cleanines, light-
ness and sound displayed by steel fumishings, using
specific examples. And in the final section of the arti-
cle, she discusses how the attempt to interpret the
complexities of modern life has been reflected in the
designers’ choice of materials.
In closing, she writes: “Despite the vast production of
all sorts of objects, tools, and packaging, which in
their short lifespan have great power to attract, there
are certain objects which have value beyond time and
space. Furniture and objects, houses and cities, are
not used for a particular purpose only, but also have
symbolic value, appeal to one’s common sense, and
serve to inspire.” ■
