The article provides a summary of the author’s
thesis for a degree in forestry at the Agricultural
University in Ás, Norway. The title of the thesis
being “Larch in Iceland, a comparison of species,
provenances and sites.”
The first part of the article describes the history
of larch in Iceland, the early experiences and
previous research. Larch spp. have proved to be
some of the more successful exotic trees for
afforestation in Iceland.

Larch was first introduced in Iceland in 1900.
These early trials were unsuccessful due to the
lack of understanding of the importance of prove-
nance choice. The species was reintroduced in
1937 and 1938, this time using a provenance from
Archangelsk in U.S.S.R. (Larix sibirica), and
most of the trees were planted in East Iceland.
This provenance has grown well, and due to this
success, later efforts in species introduction were
to a great extent concentrated on Siberian larch.
