Since 1951, relatively large numbers of larch
seedlings have been planted, some 200-400
thousand annually during the last few years.
Altogether 99 provenances of various larch spe-
cies have been tested, most of which are of
Siberian larch.
The second part of the article reports on an
investigation conducted by the author in the
summer of 1985. The objective of this investiga-
tion was to compare larch provenances for height
growth and stem form at different locations in
Iceland. The results show that in eastern Iceland
provenances of Siberian larch have done better
than provenances of other species such as L.
decidua, L. gmelini and L.x eurolepis. No pro-
found differences were found between the
various provenances of Siberian larch. Site qual-
ity was shown to be more important factor than
provenance. Height growth and stem form varied
considerably within Iceland. Trees growing in
inland areas of East Iceland were superior to
trees elsewhere in the country. Siberian larch was
also found to grow well in inland regions of North
and South Iceland. These areas appear to fulfill
the requirements of the species for cold, uninter-
rupted winters and moderately long and mild
summers. In addition there were indications that
southeriy provenances of Siberian larch were
more successful in South Iceland than in the
North.
