Villiers, a British diplomat, was appointed British Consul to the Faroes in 1900 and resided in Tórshavn from May 1900 to May 1905 and again from November 1914 to August 1915. His detailed reports to the British Govemment as well as the descriptions given in his memoirs bear witness to his great and unbiased interest in all aspects of Faroese life past and present. Villiers, who also officiated as a British consul in Bogota, Malaga, Stockholm and Esbjerg, retired from diplomatic service in 1919.
