Information from trace fossils comple-
ments that from body fossils. The type of
information preserved is different, but
equally useful. Although we usually
have no idea what organism made the
trace, trace fossils often preserve the
best evidence of fossil behaviour and are
frequently excellent environmental indi-
cators.
In this paper the history of ichnology is
briefly reviewed and ecological classi-
fication of trace fossils summarized.
Trace fossils are abundant here and
there in Icelandic sedimentary deposits.
Some well preserved examples are in-
troduced (see plates).
