Ritmennt, a new annual publication of the
National and University Library of Iceland, is a
continuation of the annual Landsbókasafn
íslands, Áibók (1944-1993), and will contain
articles in bibliography, philology and related
fields, as well as brief accounts of important new
acquisitions and other news-related items of rel-
evance to the National and University Library
and its functions.

The National and University Library of
Iceland opened in a new building on December
1, 1994. Addresses given on that occasion by the
Chairman of the Building Committee, Dr Finn-
bogi Guðmundsson; the Minister of Education
and Culture, Mr Ólafur G. Einarsson; and the
National Librarian, Mr Einar Sigurðsson, are
printed on pp. 12-15, 16-19, and 20-21, respect-
ively.

As a young man the Danish scholar Carl
Christian Rafn played an important role in the
founding of the National Library of Iceland.
However, he is best known for his pioneering
effort in founding the Society of Northern
Antiquaries in Copenhagen, and his key role as
its secretary, frorn its beginnings in 1826 to his
death in 1864. Rafn shaped the publication pol-
icies of the Society, thereby creating a powerful
instrument for making thc ancient literature of
Iceland and the Scandinavian North known
throughout the world.

A valuable collection of about 90 old maps of
Iceland, built up in the course of several decades
by Mr Kjartan Gunnarsson, a Reykjavílt pharma-
cist, was presented to the library in 1995. A cata-
logue of the collection compiled by Mr Jökull
Sævarsson is printed on pp. 58-67.
Kristín Bragadóttir: Eimreiðin. Útgáfa rnenn-
ingartímarits fyrir 100 árum. Ritmennt 1 (1996),
pp. 68-85.
The first six years in the publishing history of
Eimreiðin, the literary and cultural journal, are
examined from a literary-sociological point of
view, mostly on the basis of the personal ar-
chives of Professor Finnur Jónsson, Mr Bogi Tli.
Melsteð, and Dr Þorvaldur Tlioroddsen in the
Royal Library in Copenlragen, and Dr Valtýr
Guðmundsson, Mr Þorsteinn Erlingsson, and Dr
Sigfús Blöndal in the National and University
Library of Iceland.

Dr Haraldur Sigurðsson, the librarian and his-
torian of cartography, died in 1995. He worked in
the National Library of Iceland for rnore than
thirty years and published extensively in differ-
ent fields. His publications, which include the
monumental Kortasaga íslands (The Cartogra-
phy of Iceland) I-II (1971 and 1978), are listed by
Ms Nanna Bjarnadóttir on pp. 90-99.
