LÆKNABLAÐIÐ 1998; 84 607 Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine in Current Oncology Norrænt námskeið í Reykjavík 23.-26. september, 1998 Lectures, informal discussions, demonstrations, and practical laboratory experience. The course will be held in English. Topics: Review of the role of the clinical biochemistry laboratory in oncology. Special emphasis will be on integration of novel insights in cancer biology with more traditional methods. The course consists of lectures, laboratory demonstrations and group discus- sion. Materials covered include molecular genetics of cancer, i.e. DNA repair defects and genome instability. Familial cancer syndromes will be reviewed with focus on laboratory workup in risk assessment, diagnosis and monitoring of treatment. We will address key issues of current interest to the clinical biochemist such as comparison of biochemical and molecular genetic tests with other diagnostic modalities and why clinicians and patients consider tumor markers to be terror markers. The course is primarily designed for physicians specializing in clinical biochemistry or oncology in the Nordic countries. Young research scientists in oncology or related fields, as well as fully qualified professionals working within the field or interested in the topic may also attend. Newly qualified doctors are also invited to attend. The course will be limi- ted to 40 participants. Registration fee is 10,000.- Icelandic krónur. Host Faculty 1.
