The collection of ice reports was continued
as described above until the beginning of the
second World War, during which it was very
much hampered, since ice reports became sec-
ret, as any material pertaining to shipping.
Some reports were still obtained from Icelandic
ships. The Danish publication on ice condi-
tions in the arctic seas was discontinued until
1946. Some reports became available after the
war, as for example observations on ice condi-
tions near Iceland, which the British Meteoro-
logical Office made available to Icelandic
authorities. These reports partly l'illed a gap,
which otherwise woulcl have occurred in the
history of sea ice near Iceland.
After the war, the situation did not improve
immediately, and the time interval from 1945
to 1951 is among the poorest in ice reports
