Jökulhlaup í Köldukvísl SIGMUNDUR FREYSTE I NSSON , VERKFRÆÐISTOFA SIGURÐAR THORODDSEN S.F., REYKJAVÍK ABSTRACT In the airea called Hamarskriki, west of Mt. Hamarinn in weslern Vatnajökull, betioeen the outlet glaciers Köldukvíslarjökull and Tungnár- jökull, two glacier dammed lakes, Hamarslón artd Hvitalón, are known to have existed from time to time. The situation of these lakes, according to ma.ps 1939 and 1945, aerial photo- graphs 1960 and field reconnaissance 1970, is shown in Figs. 1—4. The glaciers Köldukvíslar- jökull and Tungnárjökull are surging glaciers p.,nd the lakes have been dammed when the glaciers have advanced. During recession of the glaciers periodic jökulhlaups have occurred. Discharge hydrographs of Kaldakvisl River for some of these jökulhlaups are shown in Fig. 5. These floods are small in magnitude but a considerably bigger flood, tota,l volume about 20 Gl occurred last summer (Aug. 1—3, 1972). This flood originated in Hamarslón Lake. The damming of the lake this time was presumably Myncl 1. Hamarskriki og umhverfi 1939. Uppdrátt- ur íslands, Blað 76, hluti. Fig. 1. Hamarskriki and vicinity 1939. Map of Ice- land, sheet 76, part.
