Public Health in Iceland 1930. — A Summary.
1. In 1930 the climntic conditions were less favourable than in the
year before. The ntmospheric pressure in the whole country was 1,4
mm. below the average. The mean temperature of the air was 1,0°
above the average. The rninfnll was 32% ahove the average.
During the year there was a great decline in trade. A heavy fall in
prices of fish and most other articles of export set in during the lat-
ter hall' of the year. This was the first sign ol' the World Crisis’ having
reached Iceland, hut as yet its consequences, such as unemployment
and general suffering were not widely felt.
2. Population, births nnd dcnths. The population was on December
31st 1930 108627, including Reykjavik 28052 (1929: 106350 and
26428). The mnrringe rnte was 7,1 (7,2), the birth rate 26,1 (25,0)
and denth rnte 11,6 (11,7) per 1000 inhabitants. The lowest death rate
had been attained in 1928: 10,8%c. Infant mortalitij was slightly higher
than in the year before, 45,2 (43,0) ]>er 1000 born alive, the last years
figure being the lowest on record in Iceland.

4. Epidemic disenses. The incidence of epidemic disettses is shown
in tahles II, III and IV, 1—25.
The following tahle shows the incidence of epidemic disettses in
1921—1930 as also the agg 'regate numher of deaths from each
disease during the same period.
