Many manuscripts have texts derived from 181 g; see first 4859, below,
p.LVII.
1000, 634, 59 and 45
The four later manuscripts described in section 1, namely 1000, 634, 59 and
45, contain texts of Mírmanns saga which are similar to each other, and
which are primary texts in at least part of the saga. They share variants which
distinguish them as a group from all other existing texts, and as each has vari-
ants of its own, they seem to be derived from a lost common original. Their
text is a kind of A-text, and the sigla adopted for them in this edition are re-
spectively A4, A5, A6 and A7. Their relationship as a group to the other A-texts,
S6, 179 and 181 g (= A', A2 and A3), is a matter of great interest; it is discussed
below, but conclusions reached there have been anticipated in the comparison
of the texts in 179 and 181 g above, pp.xxxvn-XLii.
At times the text these manuscripts agree on differs from all others on a
grand scale. In the last part of Mírmann’s speech attempting to convert his
father (A 976'95 Enn-er), A1, B and C, although differing from each other in
some substantial ways, agree in the main, but A4-A7 diverge widely. The pass-
age is quoted here from A4 (with some but not all of the readings of A5)2:
oc hann vardveitti þá þriá menn í glóandi elldsins ofni. Hann gaf Judith
sigur á þeim grimma víkíng Hólophernes. Hann leiddi (+ Loth A5) út af
Sódóma, oc hans hiski enn borginn spck til grunna. Hann frelsadi kóng-
2 A7, it raay be said for the sake of corapleteness, lacks the last third of the passage, and also the
next passage to be quoted below, because of the loss of a leaf.
